USCIS reiterates immigration benefits for Chilean nationals

Today I have information about the immigration benefits available to Chilean citizens, currently in the United States legally, after the earthquakes that devastated Chile.

Yesterday the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reminded Chileans about the temporary relief measures that are available to citizens of countries that have experienced a natural disaster.

At this time, Chilean citizens who qualify have the following benefits:

Authorization of changes or extensions of status of your nonimmigrant visa, even if the stay permit initially granted has already expired.

Expedited processing of re-entry permit applications and re-entry permit extensions. It is important to note that a person should not leave the country with a reentry permit if he or she has ever been undocumented in the U.S.

Expedited processing of immigrant petitions for immediate relatives of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, provided an immigrant visa is available.

4. Assistance to permanent residents of the U.S. who are stranded in Chile without documents.

5. In some instances, expedited processing of employment authorization documents, including for persons on student visas.

Every rule has its exception. Therefore, as always, consult with an immigration attorney for information specific to your particular case.
