Several Immigration Courts around the United States have begun to use explanatory videos to provide information about their rights to immigrants during their first hearings to reduce costs.

But that doesn't mean interpreters will no longer be used, says the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).

Some media have mistakenly reported that videos replace interpreters in the courts and this is not the case.

"EOIR has not eliminated interpreters., y in-person and telephone interpreters are available for after the video ads are shown", says Amanda St. Jean a spokeswoman for EOIR.

Interpreters will continue to provide assistance in person or by telephone, and will be available after the video announcements are shown.

The use of the explanatory videos began on July 17, 2019. EOIR states that the measure was implemented in order to improve court efficiency and reduce substantial interpreter costs at the Krome, Miami, New York and Varick Street immigration courts.

July 31, 2019, video notices were extended to immigration courts in Los Angeles and San Francisco..

The spokeswoman did not say how much EOIR would save by using the videos.

Immigration Judge video
In the EOIR videos, Immigration Judge Christopher Santoro explains the judicial process and immigrant rights in immigration court.

The video notices are pre-recorded in English with English and Spanish subtitles and explain the purpose of the immigration court proceedings, the respondent's rights and address legal representation.

At the end of the video, the immigration judge will address the individual case of each person in his or her court.

For the time being, these videos are being used in a minority of immigration courts to begin to standardize the process for notices issued in immigration proceedings.

EOIR is analyzing the reaction to this new process before creating additional translation videos or expanding its use.
