Senate blocks bill and debate on the DREAM Act

In a vote of 56 in favor and 43 against, the U.S. Senate today blocked a defense bill that included the DREAM act in an amendment. Sixty votes were needed for the proposal to be debated and the bill to move forward. Not a single Republican voted for it. Two Democrats also left their party ranks to join the Republicans in opposing the defense spending bill.

Republicans oppose the two amendments that were added to the bill: the DREAM act, which would legalize hundreds of thousands of undocumented students, and the initiative to eliminate the ``Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' policy, which prohibits homosexual soldiers from openly manifesting their sexual orientation.
