By a vote of 68-32, the U.S. Senate today passed the comprehensive immigration reform bill entitled the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). (Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act" (S. 744).
Now, the debate on comprehensive immigration reform moves to the U.S. House of Representatives where an immigration reform bill has not yet been introduced. The Republican Party controls the House of Representatives and many of them do not agree with comprehensive immigration reform.
The House of Representatives must introduce and pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill, because without it, it will not be possible to make the necessary changes to the immigration laws that would allow for the improvement of the immigration system and the legalization of millions of people in this country.
If there are any differences between the Senate and House immigration reform bills, a special committee will be established to reconcile the differences.
If they reach an agreement, the bill approved by both chambers will be sent to President Obama for his signature, becoming law.
It is important to note that S. 744 does not yet provide any immigration benefits. Therefore, beware of those who promise you permanent residency at this time through the bill that has been passed in the Senate. Remember, this is only the first step. It is not yet the law.
