President Obama prepares his own immigration reform plan

President Obama is preparing a contingency plan in case the U.S. Congress fails to pass an immigration reform bill.

The newspaper USA Today revealed the existence of a "draft" presidential proposal that would create a new "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa that would allow undocumented immigrants to become legal permanent residents within 8 years.

Obama's "Plan B" also proposes more resources for border security and requires businesses to verify the legal status of their new employees through the federal E-Verify system within 4 years.

According to the White House bill, to qualify for a "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa, undocumented immigrants who apply for it will have to meet a series of stringent requirements, including the payment of back taxes. If approved, they would be able to file applications for their spouses or children living outside the country.

The program would disqualify undocumented immigrants with certain criminal records and who have served time in prison.

Those who qualify will receive an identification card proving their legal status in the country.

To combat fraud, the project proposes the creation of a new Social Security card.

The White House draft was disseminated among various government agencies and eventually fell into the hands of the press, causing a stir among Republican lawmakers.

It is important to note that only members of Congress can introduce a bill. President Obama will have to convince members of the Senate and House of Representatives to bring his immigration reform proposal before Congress.
