Starting today, May 5, people who want to file an application for citizenship must use the new version of the form approved by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Please note that the form has been changed, but not eligibility requirements for naturalization.
The Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, must be postmarked with the date 9/13/2013. USCIS will only accept the most recent version of the form and will reject and return all naturalization applications using earlier editions of Form N-400.
To verify that it is the correct version, look for the issue date at the bottom of the Form N-400 page.
The new version of the form has 21 pages, as opposed to the previous 10 pages. According to USCIS, the instructions are now clearer and the incorporation of 2D barcode technology will improve the efficiency and accuracy of the information so that fewer forms are rejected.
The questions are similar. The difference is that there are some additional questions to clarify information and they are presented in a new format to make them easier to read. This will help the USCIS determine if the person is eligible for citizenship.
You can watch a video about the changes to Form N-400 at USCIS YouTube channel.
U.S. citizenship is the highest immigration benefit the U.S. government can grant. That is why they carefully scrutinize each person who applies for the benefit.
It is recommended that they take advantage of 2D barcode technology by accessing the updated version of Form N-400 to fill it out electronically.
If you are unable to complete Form N-400 electronically, you may print it out and complete it by hand.
Before submitting the form, be sure to sign it, include the correct fee and the requested supporting documentation to avoid any delays.
It is of utmost importance that any person wishing to apply for citizenship consult with an immigration attorney or federally accredited representative to determine whether he or she meets all eligibility requirements.
