New phone scam targeting immigrants uncovered

Be warned! There are people calling on the phone posing as immigration agents, asking for personal information and money. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately.

In recent weeks, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) discovered the new scam, which targets individuals who have filed immigration applications with USCIS.

Using a technique called "Caller ID spoofing," scammers pose as USCIS officials and ask for personal information, such as a Social Security number, passport number, or alien identification number (A-number). The scammer tells the person that their immigration records supposedly have errors and asks them to make a payment to make the necessary corrections.

USCIS never calls over the phone to ask for any type of payment or personal information. Do not give payment or personal information over the phone to anyone claiming to be a USCIS officer.

It is always recommended to protect your personal information and not to provide details about your immigration application in public places.

If you have been a victim of this telephone scam, please report it to the Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ or report it to the appropriate state authority.

Visit www.uscis.gov/avoidscams for information on where to report scams in your state.

If you have any questions about your immigration history, call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283, or schedule an InfoPass appointment by visiting the USCIS website: https://infopass.uscis.gov/.
