Deadlines for implementation of deferred action announced

DREAMers will soon have long-awaited relief from administrative relief, known as the deferred action program, announced on June 15 by Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

During a presentation before the House Judiciary Committee, Napolitano today announced that the procedures for applying for the deferred action program will be released on August 1 and applications for authorization to stay and employment authorization will begin to be accepted on August 15.

The deferred action program provides that certain young people who were brought to the United States illegally as young children, who do not pose a risk to national security or public safety, and who meet several key criteria will be considered to remain in the country legally and avoid deportation proceedings.
