Advice for undocumented pregnant women

If you are about to give birth, it is important that when your baby is born you make arrangements to get the newborn's social security number before leaving the hospital.

In the hospitals there are authorized personnel to do this procedure, with the mother's permission while she is hospitalized with the baby.

According to social security regulations, an undocumented person cannot register or request a social security number for their newborns once they leave the hospital.

If they do not do the paperwork within the hospital, they will have to rely on a relative who has documents, or wait until the child is old enough to make the request on their own.

By having a social security number at birth, an infant may have access to social benefits to which he or she is entitled as a U.S. citizen.
