111 dead inside immigration detention centers

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has released the most recent list of detainees who have died inside ICE detention centers.

Between October 2003 and May 2010, 111 people have died inside ICE facilities in different parts of the country. The majority of the deceased are of Hispanic origin, with a small number of Europeans, Caribbeans, Africans and Asians. For the most part, the deaths are related to medical causes. There have been cases in which immigrant detainees have complained of medical malpractice, as in the case of Francisco Castañeda, who died of cancer after being denied medical treatment. Although the government acknowledged medical malpractice in Castañeda's case, the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that federal medical officials cannot be sued individually.
